I downloaded a VLC player?

I use Open Source and generally don't use VLC to burn to disk -- though I do use it to listen to podcasts and watch just about everything. I use Linux so I won't recommend specific dvd conversion programs -- they might not be available to you or worse be too complicated, but I would look around for dvd conversion software.
