The anime I'm watching is seriously disturbing...?

I started watching this old anime (like 1976!) and it's apperently the first yaoi ever! It's called Kaze to Ki No Uta (The poem of the wind & trees) It has an original story and it's beautifully animated...but I found out one of the boys dies and he just had such a horrible life I was looking forward to a happy ending to the boy lovers...and I just am sitting here BAWLING like I can't believe they did that! It's just horrible! I sound like such a baby, but should I keep watching? Lol sorry this is such a trivial problem, but thanks anyways!
